ME AS A YOUNGIN'

Early Childhood

In my early childhood years, I recall going to Disneyland quite often with my younger brother, David. Here we were both exposed to the technology of roller coasters and rides such as merry-go-rounds, boat rides, etc. Disneyland is a very large park, so we were able to work on gross motor skills such as running, walking, jumping, etc. I remember as a child I was shocked and scared to meet the Disney mascots such as Mickey and Minnie; eventually I learned to accommodate these characters into the category of humans inside costumes.

David and I are two years apart, so we shared a lot of our toys that often times included some sort of technology. In these photographs I was around the age of 4-5 and I was moving from solitary play to cooperative play. As seen in the photo with the car racetrack with my brother, I was able to form full sentences and communicate with my brother to build the track together. My fine motor skills such as grasping a pencil became stronger, as seen in the photo of me using a writing toy. At this age I was also very inquisitive when encountering something new. This can be seen in the photo of my head behind a Canon camera with David. Disposable cameras were in my life from birth, but digital cameras were not. The new digital Cannon camera created a sense of disequilibrium for me, so I explored the item in order to assimilate this new digital camera with the preexisting schema of disposable cameras.
